My Family Culture

My Family Culture

  • A description of the three items you would choose
Choosing three items to take on a journey that will most likely be permanent presents a difficult challenge. Other than my family what items are needed for this journey to the unknown?

The three items I chose were:
My Bible
Photos of family during family gatherings
My bean pot and beans (to plant)

  • How you would explain to others what each of these items means to you
I would take my Bible to insure our family is able to maintain a connection to the cornerstone of our culture, our faith in God. The photos of family celebrating happy and sad times to help with  feeling connected to my extended  family. The bean pot was my son’s idea, when I shared this assignment with him his reply was “You have to take some beans, because you don’t know what kind of food will be available.

  • Your feelings if, upon arrival, you were told that you could only keep one personal item and have to give up the other two items you brought with you
As I prepared for this assignment I thought in depth about the importance of family and culture. None of the material items were of extreme importance or necessary for my culture to remain within me.    I believe the most important aspect of this journey would be will I be able or allowed to practice my cultural beliefs or would I be forced to abandon what is familiar to me and conform to way of life that I know nothing about.

  • Any insights you gained about yourself, your family culture, diversity, and/or cultural differences in general, as a result of this exercise
Trying to determine what three items to choose for the journey prove to be a challenge. What other than my family did I need to remain connected to my cultural heritage? The items were a part of my culture but were not a necessity. Culture heritage is a link to our past, passed on by ancestors. It is something that once embraced is everlasting.
