             The People Who Influenced my Early Childhood
  • Mother - Her love and support was instrumental in my successes as a child and an adult. My mother taught me to believe in myself and to strive to do my best in all things.  
  • Father-   I am the first born and a Daddy's girl.I love sitting and talking to my Dad. My Dad has always been a follower of current events and this is a special time he and I share when I visit.
  • Sister- My twin (actually we are 11 months apart)  When we were young we often had matching outfits and we were in the same grade due to my birth date being after the cutoff date.  She always supported me and encouraged me to excel.When I decided to go back to school, she was right there with the support and encouragement I needed. 
  • Aunt - My mother's older sister did not have any children of her own so my siblings and I were her babies. She visited every Saturday and brought us the latest 45 hit single. she just made me feel like I was special. She told me stories about my Mom and her childhood growing up. She helped rear my mother because  their mother passed away  when my mom was six years old. In a way she was like a grandmother to me.
  • Grandmother - My Dad's mom lived in Louisiana, which seemed so far away when I was young. The drive to her house seemed to take forever, but I had so much fun once we arrived. My Grandmother grew strawberries, and she always served them with a little sugar sprinkled on them. Special memories of her come to mind whenever I eat strawberries.
My mother, aunt and grandmother are deceased, but all of the smiles, words of encouragement, hugs and love they gave me remains me today. My mother's love and encouraging words are with me always. I still share moments of whats happening in the world today with my Dad. My sister is still there to talk to.

I also had an aunt that raised me. She didn't have children of her own but she loved and treated all of us as we were hers.

Establishing Professional Contacts and Expanding Resources  My initial request has not produced any response as of yet. I am hopeful that I will hear something in the coming week. If not, I will pursue the alternative assignment.  I requested correspondence form an early childhood professor in South Africa at the University of Limpopo, and I also emailed an organization in Mali for information on their early childhood issues and trends. I am eager to compare the differences in approaches as well as the areas that are similar. Since I am familiar with several of the organizations listed in the resource section I wanted to find one that I wanted to learn more about. I chose to explore is the Global Fund for Children (GFC). The site contains a variety of information from all over the world concerning children’s well-being. According to Gilliam (2003) ongoing, job-embedded professional development is essential in guiding early childhood educators in understanding and adapting the curriculum to meet the learning needs of culturally and linguistically diverse children and children with disabilities, and design more effective approaches to working with all children. I intend to utilize the information I learn in this course to plan and implement best practices to produce positive outcomes for children.
